Studentische or wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft with advanced knowledge of Arabic
The 25-year project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Munich is dedicated to the edition and study of the Arabic and Latin versions of Ptolemy’s astronomical and astrological texts and related material up to 1700 A.D. The project appoints on a regular basis three or four studentische or wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte who are paid the regular fees for Hilfskräfte (up to a maximum of 80 hours per month).
- The tasks of the Hilfskräfte working for the Arabic section include, among others,
- transcription of Arabic texts (also from manuscripts);
- bibliographical searches, especially also in manuscript catalogues;
- compilation of tables of contents of Arabic scientific manuscripts;
- updating the project’s database of secondary literature by ordering and scanning relevant secondary literature.
Reading skills in Arabic (equivalent to at least two semesters Hauptfach) are required.
Interest in doing scholarly work, especially on medieval Arabic manuscripts, as well as good accounts of English and/or German are highly recommendable.
Current vacancy
Starting in the late Fall of 2025, we are looking to appoint a Hilfskraft with a good knowledge of Arabic for 20 to 40 hours per month for the above tasks.
