Work A.7

Ptolemy
Handy Tables

Content

A set of astronomical tables, together with canons for their use.

Origin

Greek (Πρόχειροι κανόνες, ‘Handy Tables’). Only the canons are extant in their original version. The tables themselves are known through Theon of Alexandria’s version. The Handy Tables do not survive as such in Arabic and in Latin (but see A.7.1), even though they represent the prototype of most Arabic and Latin astronomical tables.

Ed.

Both the canons and the tables received a first edition, together with a French translation, by N. Halma, Commentaire de Théon d’Alexandrie sur le livre III de l’Almageste de Ptolémée. Tables manuelles des mouvemens des astres, Paris, 1822-1825, 3 vols (without critical apparatus). Critical edition of the canons by J. L. Heiberg, Claudii Ptolemaei opera quae exstant omnia, II: Opera astronomica minora, Leipzig, 1907, 159-185. A critical edition of the tables is in the process of being published by A. Tihon and R. Mercier, see Πτολεμαίου Πρόχειροι Κανόνες. Les Tables Faciles de Ptolémée, 1a (A. Tihon): Tables A1-A2. Introduction, Edition critique, Louvain-la-Neuve, 2011; 1b (R. Mercier), Transcription and Commentary, Louvain-la-Neuve, 2011. Table A20 (Table of the Distances of the Fixed Stars) has been edited by Guidetti, 62-73.
