Studentische or Wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft with knowledge of Latin

Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus is seeking to appoint one or two Studentische or Wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte (20-80 hours/month) with knowledge of Latin. The focus will be on scholarly tasks, in particular the transcription/edition of Latin astronomical or astrological texts of the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, with the prospect of online publication under the Hilfskraft’s name. This job provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in manuscripts, palaeography, medieval or Renaissance Latin, text editing and, more generally, intellectual history. No previous experience in palaeography is required (training will be provided where needed).

Additional tasks may include:

  • Historical and bio-bibliographical research, especially in medieval and Renaissance intellectual history, and the history of science
  • Implementation of the PAL digital library, including scanning articles and ordering books at the Staatsbibliothek and other libraries in Munich.

Good knowledge of English (reading and speaking skills) is recommended.

Note that the Hilfskraft position can count, if requirements are met, as a Praktikum for a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree at the LMU.

Starting date: October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Enquiries and expressions of interest can be sent (in English or German) to David Juste at djuste@ptolemaeus.badw.de.
