Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus

_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

Hyderabad, Jamia Nizamia, Arabic falsafa 6

Single incomplete work: Arabic.  Date:

undated.

Or.:

unknown; unknown scribe.

Prov.:

two round restoration (tanqīḥ) stamps with dates 1366/1946-7 and 1409/1988-9 (both p. 1). Former shelfmarks (?): ‘25’ (p. I); hayʾat (p. I and label on spine). Since the handlist (Fihrist-i ʿarabī) refers to MSS falsafa 6 and 9 respectively as … nāqiṣ al-ākhir (al-juzʾ al-awwal) and … nāqiṣ al-awwal, it is reasonable to assume that the two codices formed a two-volume copy of al-Nīsābūrī’s Tafsīr al-Taḥrīr.

Cod.: paper, I+614 pp. (paginated with Persian forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals in pencil centred just above the text area, with pp. 1 and 614 both being versos; catchwords). A large naskh hand with slight tendency to thuluth; almost fully dotted ductus with some vowel marks and frequent shaddas and hamzas. Some use of red dots as textual dividers in the beginning. Codex in acceptable condition; heavy damage by insects, some water damage, upper and lower margins of pp. 1–2 restored with slips of paper; spine heavily damaged. Dimensions: not given; 17 lines per page (misṭara imprints visible on the upper third of p. 1). Leather covers. Type III binding.

Cont.: astronomy. — Index: Ptolemaica (pp. 1–614).

Bibl.: David Pinault, ‘An Investigation of Arabic and Persian Manuscripts in Selected Indian Libraries’, Hamdard Islamicus 13/2 (1990), pp. 71–82, here p. 77, citing p. 23 of a handwritten handlist of Arabic, Persian and Urdu manuscripts, section falsafah; Fihrist-i ʿarabī-yi makhṭūṭāt-i Kutub Khāna-yi Jāmiʿa-yi Niẓāmiyya, Ḥaydarābād, Riyāsat-i Tilangāna (apparently a print-out of a digital handlist), 1446/2024-5, falsafa 6 (no. 146).
