_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

[Colour scanned images. The description relies on Bohak & Burnett and Burnett & Bohak.]
Collection of two works: Judaeo-Arabic. Date:

undated; 6th/12th or 7th/13th c.

Or.:

most probably Fusṭāṭ (Cairo); the same hand copied multiple magical texts from the Cairo Genizah. MS Cambridge, UL, Taylor-Schechter Arabic 29.51 was written by the same hand and was probably used as a template for the present manuscript. The present manuscript and T-S Ar. 43.133 were once part of the same quinion, with T-S Ar. 43.133 being the innermost and T-S Ar. 43.274 the one before the innermost bifolium.

Prov.:

brought to Cambridge in 1896-7 by Solomon Schechter.

Cod.: paper, 1 bifolium (1v numbered as ‘11’ and 2r as ‘12’ in Hindu-Arabic numerals). An idiosyncratic, experienced but rather sloppy Eastern black hand. Codex in bad condition; several lacunae, bottom part of the bifolium lost. Dimensions (bifolium): 27.6×10.5 cm; 14–16 lines per page (originally up to 27).

Cont.: astral magic. — Index: Thābit b. Qurra, fragment of Maqāla fī l-Ṭilasmāt (1r–v); Ptolemaica (2r–v).

Bibl.: Charles Burnett and Gideon Bohak, ‘A Judaeo-Arabic Version of Ṯābit ibn Qurra’s De Imaginibus and Pseudo-Ptolemy’s Opus Imaginum’, in Felicitas Opwis and David Reisman (eds), Islamic Philosophy, Science, Culture and Religion. Studies in Honor of Dimitri Gutas, Leiden / Boston: Brill, 2012, pp. 179–200, here pp. 184–187; Gideon Bohak and Charles Burnett, Thabit ibn Qurra «On Talismans» and Ps.-Ptolemy «On Images 1-9». Together with the «Liber prestigiorum Thebidis» of Adelard of Bath, Firenze: SISMEL - Edizioni del Galluzzo, 2021, pp. 40–45.
