a western hand, presumably Cheikho’s, indicates in the margins the corresponding folio numbers of the exemplar, MS London, British Library, IO Islamic 1811, copied in India in 1152/​1739-40; the astronomical part of this codex is said to have been copied from a manuscript written in 642/​1244-5 by ʿAbd al-Khayyūm b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī Fārisī and to have been collated against a manuscript finished in Mosul in 652/​1254-5 (cf. Otto Loth, A Catalogue of the Arabic Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, London: Stephen Austin and Sons, 1877, p. 132 (no. 477), and see also pp. 100 and 356 in the present manuscript). Original shelfmark: ‘752’ (Cheikho).

Cod.: paper, 356+IV pp. (paginated with Arabic-European numerals in pencil at the centre top, p. 1 being a recto [up to p. 160 between parentheses, from p. 161 onwards only on rectos]; one unnumbered empty leaf after p. 288 and two after p. 304; catchwords). A small naskh hand; partially dotted ductus. Book titles rubricated and enlarged; final sentence of books (‘tammat al-maqālā…’) often bold and centred; section titles in the Ptolemaic part overlined. Abjad numerals and geometrical points in the text not overlined. Very neatly drawn diagrams; no tables. Calligraphic basmala at the beginning of the fourth part. Codex in excellent condition. Dimensions: 16×10 cm; 25 lines per page. Quarter-bound marbled covers. Type III binding.
