Work C.1.8

Ibn Sīnā
Talkhīṣ al-Majisṭī

This reworking of Ptolemy’s Almagest is one section (fann) of the mathematical part (al-riyāḍiyyāt) of Ibn Sīnā’s most famous philosophical compendium, the Kitāb al-Shifāʾ (The Cure). He composed this work from ad 1016 to 1027 (Gutas, pp. 106–109), and he wrote the astronomical part after his arrival in Isfahan in 1024. It is not to be confused with the astronomical part of one of his other philosophical summae, namely the Kitāb al-Najāt (The Salvation), which he wrote already in 1012–1013 in Jurjān (Gutas, pp. 462–466). Usually the astronomical section of the mathematical part is the second, after geometry and before arithmetic and music. However, some manuscripts transmit a different order, in which astronomy is the last section of mathematics (Celli, pp. 325–326). The astronomical section of the Kitāb al-Shifāʾ is extant in more than 50 manuscripts. For a list of the manuscripts that contain (sections of) the mathematical part, see the overview provided by the Avicenn@-project at https://www.avicennaproject.eu/#/downloads/mss. The contents of the Talkhīṣ al-Majisṭī and, in particular, the mathematical arguments are largely unstudied. Complete title in the edition by Madkūr: Talkhīṣ Kitāb Baṭlamyūs fī l-taʿlīm wa-huwa Kitāb al-Majisṭī. Alternative titles: al-Majisṭī fī ʿilm al-hayʾa (al-Jūzjānī); Sharḥ al-Majisṭī (London, BL, Or. 7368); Mukhtaṣar Kitāb al-Majisṭī (Paris, BnF, ar. 2484 ).

Content: Ibn Sīnā’s treatise is divided into 13 books (maqālas) that closely correspond to the 13 books of Ptolemy’s Almagest. In the introduction, Ibn Sīnā explains that he will remain true to the contents of the Almagest, but in a condensed way. He writes that he will not include the tables, that he will not reiterate all of the figures from the Almagest, and that he will omit some calculations (Madkūr, pp. 15–16). This enterprise becomes evident, for example, in Books VII and VIII, in which Ibn Sīnā omits the star table. As another deviation from the structure of the Almagest, Ibn Sīnā subsumes Books IX–XI under one header, namely ‘On the summary of the matters of the planets’ (Fī jawāmiʿ umūr al-kawākib al-mutaḥayyira). Similarly, the oldest known manuscript of the Kitāb al-Shifāʾ, London, BL, Or. 11190, takes Books VII and VIII together.

Ibn Sīnā closes Book XIII by writing that it is the end of his abbreviation (‘mā khtaṣarnā-hu’, Madkūr, p. 647). He then adds an additional chapter in which he addresses the problem how to harmonize the contents of the Almagest with natural philosophy (Ragep & Ragep, p. 6; Gutas, pp. 466–467; Nikfahm-Khubravan, pp. 117–180). In London, BL, Or. 11190, f. 140r, it is entitled as follows: ‘Final book that is added to the abridgment of the Almagest concerning what the Almagest does not indicate’ (al-Maqāla al-akhīra al-muḍāfa ilā mā khtaṣara min Kitāb al-Majisṭī mimmā laysa yadullu ʿalay-hi al-Majisṭī). Occasionally, this extra chapter is also transmitted separately, e.g., in Istanbul, Topkapı, Ahmet III 3303 (Ragep & Ragep, p. 6).

Note During his work on the Kitāb al-Shifāʾ, Ibn Sīnā planned to write another treatise called al-Lawāḥiq (The Appendices), to which he refers multiple times in the Shifāʾ (Gutas, pp. 160–161). For example, he writes in the introduction to the part on astronomy that he will deal with works later than Ptolemy’s Almagest mostly in al-Lawāḥiq (Madkūr, p. 15). However, no traces of such a work have been found, with the curious exception of a treatise on astronomical instruments that was edited and translated by Wiedemann & Juynboll (see also Gutas, p. 467) and whose title in the surviving manuscripts suggests that it should be read together with al-Lawāḥiq. In MS Rampur, Raza, Arabic 3477, ff. 680r–682v, this treatise directly follows the astronomical part of the Kitāb al-Shifāʾ (this has escaped previous scholarship as the folios are in slight disorder). On the basis of the current state of research it is unclear how the treatise relates to al-Lawāḥiq (Reisman, pp. 41–42).

Text: [edition by Madkūr]

Ed.: This work was edited by Madkūr as part of the Cairo edition of the entire Kitāb al-Shifāʾ. The preface was translated into German by Wiedemann. Kubesov & al-Dabbāgh translated Books I–V into Russian from the manuscript London, BL, Or. 7368 with an extensive introduction on the assumption that it concerned al-Fārābī’s Sharḥ al-Majisṭī (C.1.5). The extra chapter was recently translated into English by Nikfahm-Khubravan (pp. 383–390).
