Aligarh, Maulana Azad Library, Subhanullah Arabic 520/8
from the Persian colophon (251r): ‘Tuesday, 6 … of the year …3 (?) ʿayn/bḥ (?), corresponding to 24 Shaʿbān of the year … Hijra [first month name and era unclear, both years erased], when the Sun was in 15 degrees Taurus 〈in〉 the year 〈..〉26’. Assuming that the solar year refers to the Malikshāh calendar, the only possible date for the exact correspondence is Tuesday, 15 Urdibihisht 126 Jalālī = 24 Shaʿbān 600 Hijra = 27 April 1204, which seems too early. See further below.
Or.:the name of the copyist was erased from the colophon; a note on an inserted slip of paper (251v) suggests that the owner al-Ashkī l-Ilāhī b. Falsafī l-Riyāḍī (see below) was the copyist. In that case the intended date is most likely Tuesday, 24 Shaʿbān 1238 = 6 May 1823, when the Sun was indeed in 15° Taurus.
Prov.:a square seal ‘min maktabat al-Ashkī l-Ilāhī b. Falsafī l-Riyāḍī’ dated 1255/1839-40 (1r); a round seal including the name al-Ḥusaynī (1r); a mostly illegible seal of ʿAlī Muẓaffar Khān (1r); an erased seal (251r). Several notes by a librarian, partially illegible on the scans (1r). Modern stamp ‘University Library, Aligarh. Subhanullah collection’ (1r, 50r, 140v, 230r, 251r).
Cod.: paper, 254 ff. (foliated with Urdu forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals at the centre top of rectos, with 91 and 135 skipped, 144 and 179 repeated, and 55 and 56 between 48 and 49; the actual f. 135 is incorrectly inserted after f. 143 and numbered 144; catchwords). Possibly multiple clear nastaʿlīq and some naskh hands, generally dotted. Book and section titles in (presumably) red, often omitted; all book and section beginnings indicated in the margins by a modern hand in pencil. Abjad and Hindu-Arabic numerals and geometrical points in the text overlined in red. Most of the diagrams and some small tables in the margins; spaces reserved for some missing tables (e.g., 18v–19r for the sine); a rosette (144r, i.e., the actual f. 135r). An inner frame around the text area; an outer frame around the inner area for glosses; a rule border around the outer area for glosses. Codex in acceptable condition; major damage by worms around the folds of ff. 124–151 (mostly restored), further damage in the folds from f. 187 onwards; some damage by insects. Dimensions: not given; between 10 and 19 lines per page.
