Prov.:several erased seals (1r). Librarian’s note ‘ʿulūm-i riyāḍī’ (1r). Persian transcription of the name of Colonel George William Hamilton (1807–1868), who collected around one thousand Arabic and Persian manuscripts in India (Ir). Later the codex was part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, the collection of books and manuscripts of the astronomer and bibliophile James Ludovic Lindsay (1847–1913), the 26th Earl of Crawford (book plate, inside of back cover). Old shelfmark: ‘Hamilton 93’, corrected to ‘Arabic 298’ (inside of back cover).
Cod.: paper, I+397 ff. (foliated with small Arabic-European numerals in pencil, skipping ‘320’ to ‘329’; catchwords). A single hand in Indian nastaʿlīq (Mingana). Book and section headers, qawlu-hu and uqūlu rubricated. Numerous neatly drawn diagrams. Codex in bad condition; significant stains all through the manuscript and significant damage by insects from f. 382 onwards, frequently hindering the reading; restorations of the fold and the lower inner parts of most folios in the first part of the manuscript and of all margins towards the end. Dimensions: 230×132 mm; 19 lines per page. Brown leather covers, scuffed at the edges; upper and lower cover stamped and enhanced with a large red leather panel, onlays in gold (probably also leather): a thick golden frame, an oval centre-piece, and pendants; headband in blue and white. Type III binding.
