Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus

_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

Aligarh, Maulana Azad Library, Abd al-Hai 675/52

One incomplete work and a small fragment: Arabic.  Date:

5 Jumādā al-ūlā 721/2 June 1321 (Rashed, Les mathématiques infinitésimales V).

Or.:

al-Sulṭāniyya (Rashed, Les mathématiques infinitésimales II, p. 22); unknown scribe.

Prov.:

cf. the note below. This manuscript is also referred to as ‘ʿAbd al-Ḥayy 21’. Current shelfmark: ‘675/52’ (19v, in the restored margin).

Cod.: paper, 9 ff. (rectos foliated from ‘20’ to ‘27’ with Hindu-Arabic numerals in pencil above the text part; second, identical foliation with Hindu-Arabic numerals in pencil just left of the written area on rectos; folio number ‘21’ repeated at the top left of the restored margins on f. 21; catchwords). A naskh hand in black, described by Rashed as nastaʿlīq; mostly dotted ductus without diacritical signs; textual dividers in red. Diagrams in red and black with black labels. Codex in poor condition; moisture stains occasionally affecting the readability, last six lines on ff. 26r–v lost, all margins restored with modern paper. Dimensions: 218×76 mm (Rashed, Les mathématiques infinitésimales II, p. 23); 33 lines per page.

Cont.: astronomy, optics. — Index: Ptolemaica (19v–26v); Ibn al-Haytham, fragment from Fī muqaddimāt al-musabbaʿ (27r–v; according to the handlist of the library: Qawl fī l-Marāyā l-muḥriqa [bi-l dawāʾir], cf. Rashed, Les mathématiques infinitésimales III).

Note Rashed (Les mathématiques infinitésimales II) describes both works included in this manuscript as being part of MS ʿAbd al-Ḥayy 678/55, which, at the time when he consulted it, was a collective volume of 45 ff. in great disorder. It also contained the following works by Ibn al-Haytham (Rashed, Les mathématiques infinitésimales II; Rashed, Les mathématiques infinitésimales V; Rashed, ‘Ibn al-Hayṯam’): Qawl fī Miḥat al-kura (1r–4v and 13v–14r, now in Abdul Hai = AH 673/50); Qawl fī Tarbīʿ al-dāʾira (10r–11v, 30v, 30r, now AH 674/51); Fī l-Hilāliyyāt (14v–16v, now AH 677/54); Maqāla fī ʿIllat al-jadhr wa-iḍʿāfi-hi wa-naqli-hi (17r–19r, now AH 678/55); Fī Birkār al-dawāʾir al-ʿiẓam = Risāla fī ʿAmal dawāʾir ʿuẓām bi-āla ṣaghīra (29r, 8r–10r), now AH 676/53); Fī l-Marāyā l-muḥriqa bi-l-quṭūʿ (41r–v, 44r, 47r–48v). Apparently the manuscript was restored and split up in six parts (MSS 673/50–678/55) after Rashed consulted it.
