Or.:apparently India, unknown copyist; copied from an exemplar finished on Wednesday, 22 Ramaḍān 663/8 July 1265 for Maḥmūd al-Khaṭīb in Maragha (259v). The copyist quotes the colophon of the autograph dated 5 Shawwāl 644/13 February 1247 (259v), from which the exemplar had been copied.
Prov.:a short poem, said in the autograph to have been written by al-Ṭūsī (1r). A longer poem from al-Nīsābūrī’s commentary praising al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr (1r). Persian notes mentioning personal events nine days before and five days after the date of copying in 1283/1866 (1r). The codex was purchased for 150 Indian rupees (Rs) (front cover, note between front flyleaves). Ex-libris of George Arthur Plimpton (1855–1936) (front and back doublures). Cardbox card for the ‘Almagest in Arabic translation’ by Claudius Ptolemy, and a paper slip describing the work and codex (front flyleaves).
Cod.: paper, 259 ff. (foliated with Urdu forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals in red, mostly in the top center of rectos, f. 210 preceding f. 209; the foliation includes dozens of sheets full of notes that were glued onto additionally mounted leaves, the number of folios of the Taḥrīr itself is 189; occasional catchwords). An elegant nastaʿlīq hand in black with dotted ductus on ff. 1v–86v; several other black nastaʿlīq hands for the remainder of the text; the tables by a different, much sloppier hand (except for their titles); the notes on inserted sheets in a large variety of hands. No use of red ink. All books starting with a basmala and enlarged title at the top of a page; section titles overlined. Sloppily drawn diagrams and tables. Codex in acceptable condition; some water damage, wear at the outer corners, all margins restored. Dimensions 32×21 cm, written area: 23×12 cm; 13 or 14 lines per page on ff. 1v–86v, 19 lines per page with variations elsewhere. Half leather and mottled orange paper covers (CLIO). Type III binding.
