_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

the Ptolemaic work finished on Wednesday, 15 Dhū l-qaʿda 1313/28 April 1896 (118r); second work undated, but a different hand wrote the year ‘1312’ next to the colophon (174r).

Ptolemaic work copied from an exemplar dated to midday of Friday, 27 Rajab 1027/20 July 1618 and copied in Mecca by Ḥasan b. Muḥammad known as ʿĀṣī (118r); the scribe finished transferring text and glosses from a manuscript of al-Birjandī’s commentary (khaṭṭ al-Birjandī) into the margins of the present manuscript on Tuesday, 18 Muḥarram 1314/30 June 1896 (118r). First hand (Ptolemaic work, 1v–118r): riqāʿ characteristics, written with a thick nibbed pen; dotted ductus. Abjad and Hindu-Arabic numerals and various words overlined; geometrical points in the text with individual short overlines. Colours of diagrams indiscernable on the scans. Tables partially written vertically and in the margins; a rosette (63r). Second hand (118v–174r): riqāʿ, dotted ductus; book and section titles overlined; from f. 141v onwards tables unfilled and diagrams without lettering. Codex apparently in very good condition. Dimensions: 31×21.5 cm; 31 lines per page.

Cont.: astronomy. — Index: Ptolemaica (1v–118r); Athīr al-Dīn al-Abharī, al-Mulakhkhaṣ fī ṣināʿat al-Majisṭī (118v–174r). Blank: presumably 1r and 174v; possible blank pages between the two works were not considered in the folio count.
