a rectangular seal of ownership of Tafaḍḍul Ḥusayn Khān, dated 1174/​1760-61 (1r); an ownership statement in Arabic by Tafaḍḍul Ḥusayn, who received the manuscript from Sayyid Jaʿfar al-Shūshtarī, dated 1191/​1777-8 (1r). A statement in Persian indicating that this manuscript was sent to Abū l-Fatḥ Sulṭān Muḥāmmad Ṣafawī (the Safavid prince who died in Lucknow in 1816), by Tajammul Ḥusayn Khān, the son of Tafaḍḍul Ḥusayn Khān, on 23 Jumādā l-thānī 1229/​12 June 1814 (1r). Illegible short notes (1r); two smudged seals (1r). Old shelfmark: ‘T 1432’ by ʿArshī Zāda, dated 28.10.95 (1r); acquisition number ‘4576 M’ in pen (1r); modern library stamp in purple in the margins of many pages (e.g., 25v, 123v, 314v).

Cod.: paper, 320 ff. (foliated with Hindu-Arabic numerals, ff. 59–77 missing, folio numbers ‘87’ and ‘160’–‘169’ skipped; catchwords, sometimes trimmed). A clear naskh hand in black, almost fully dotted ductus. Book and section numbers up to section IV.2 (f. 106r) rubricated, abjad ‘4’ for the title of Book IV and abjad ‘2’ for section IV.2 in red in the margin; many sentences up to f. 108v underlined in red. No use of red from f. 109r onwards: blank spaces for numerous sentences, especially on ff. 147r–184v. Numbers in abjad or Hindu-Arabic notation, occasionally in red. Several diagrams with lines and letters in black or red in the margins of Book I. Three tables with red lines in Book I; empty spaces reserved for tables in the rest of the manuscript. Codex in bad condition; some damage caused by insects, occasionally affecting the readability; some ink corrosion and moisture stains; restorations throughout, sometimes covering parts of the text; all folios pasted. Dimensions: 23.5×14 cm; 27 lines per page. Modern half-bound covers with dark brown leather over light blue pasteboards. Type III binding.
