_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

= Jābir ibn Aflaḥ, Iṣlāḥ al-Majisṭī (C.1.1125), Books I-VI. — Index: Kitāb fī ʿilm al-hayʾa. Sharḥ-i Majisṭī (Book on the Science of Astronomy. Commentary on the Almagest) (inside front cover). — Additional titles: Sharḥ bar Majisṭī (1r). — Index: author’s preface, 1r-4r; Book I, 4v-34v; Book II, 35r-64r; Book III, 64r-77r; Book IV, 77v-105r; Book V, 105v-146r; Book VI, 146v-167v. — Very minor additions and almost no corrections (except for 97r) in the margins; a couple of glosses, one criticizing the author for knowing nothing about astronomy (50v). Version close to MS Berlin, SBPK, Lbg. 132, although the text skips many words. The absence of authorial or scribal colophons points to this manuscript being the first of a two-volume set. Mohammad Mozaffari (private communication) identified this otherwise anonymous manuscript as the Iṣlāḥ al-Majisṭī by Jābir b. Aflaḥ in September 2015.
