Or.:unknown; unknown scribe. Copied by order of ‘Sulṭān b. al-Sulṭān, al-Sulṭān Muḥammad Khān b. al-Sulṭān Murād Khān’ (2r), i.e., Mehmed II (r. 1444–1446 and 1451–1481); cf. MS Istanbul, Millet, Feyzullah Efendi 1359 (finished for Mehmed II on 2 Jumādā l-ūlā 869/31 December 1464) with almost identical decorations, layout, and handwriting. The present manuscript contains the same marginalia as Istanbul, Süleymaniye, Turhan Valide Sultan 219, another copy produced for Mehmed II at the beginning of his reign, and was thus likely copied from, or collated with, this manuscript.
Prov.:a pointed oval seal with the tughra of Bayezid II (r. 1481–1512) (1r, 212v). Seal of endowment by the Madrasa al-Fīdiyya in Constantinople, dated 1116/1704-5 (1r, 212v), and the word waqf written in black ink sprinkled with gold in the upper margins of ff. 2v, 60v and 211v. A library stamp in purple ink (1r, 212v). Old shelfmark: ‘1367’ (1r, within a stamped frame).
Cod.: paper, I+212 ff. (foliated with Hindu-Arabic numerals in pencil; no catchwords). A single very neat nastaʿlīq hand; almost fully dotted ductus, shaddas and hamzas mostly provided, no tashkīl. Golden and blue frames for the main text, space for marginal annotations surrounded by a thin blue frame. Book, chapter and paragraph beginnings in gold ink. Chapter beginnings additionally introduced by golden overlined abjad numerals and subsections with golden abjad notation in the margins. Abjad numerals in the main text in red and in gold when referring to geometrical points in diagrams, Hindu-Arabic numerals rubricated. Numerous diagrams, tables and a rosette (107v); diagram lines in gold and letters in red, or the other way around; tables with golden lines, numbers in red and black, and headers in red, black and gold. A richly decorated manuscript: illuminated double-frontispiece with lobed central mandorlas providing information on the contents (right) and praising the sultan (left); scripture in gold on mid-blue background with vegetal designs, elaborated frames with lancets (1v–2r). Mid-blue and gold also dominating the headpiece with lancets, vegetal motives in green, red and gold (2v); basmala in white. Codex in very good condition. Dimensions: 251×145 mm, written area: 162×78 mm; 23 lines per page. Elaborated brown leather binding with blind-stamped central elements with gilding on the inner covers. Type II binding.
