Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus

_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

Single work: Arabic.  Date:

finished in Jumādā l-ūlā 1235/February 1820 (colophon, 224v). This is followed by another date, presumably that of the exemplar, namely the morning of Friday, 25 Dhū l-ḥijja 1024/15 January 1616.

Or.:

unknown; copied by Masʿūd b. Shihāb al-Dīn al-Jīlī (colophon, 224v).

Prov.:

Note of possession by Sayyid Muḥammad al-Ḥusaynī, who inherited the codex from his father Ghiyāth al-Dīn Muḥammad. A list of book titles (inside front cover). Several verses of Persian poems unrelated to the text (51v, 83v, 92r). Ex-libris ‘Bibliotheca Regia Berolinensis’ with shelfmark ‘Ms. Ldbg. 493’, possibly glued over an earlier ex-libris (inside of front cover); library stamp (1r).

Cod.: paper, 224 ff. (foliation with Arabic-European numerals in pencil; catchwords). A single small, black nastaʿlīq hand; only occasionally dotted, no vowels. Book and section headers in red, occasionally spaces for headers left empty, especially for qawlu-hu and aqūlu. Abjad numbers in red. Numerous neatly drawn diagrams; space for diagram left empty on f. 23r; spaces often not large enough for the diagrams (e.g., 29v, 184r, 185v, 219v), but in some cases the text appears to have been written around the diagrams (e.g., 69v, 153r). Three tables with red lines and black and red headers and numbers. Dimensions: 26⅔×19½ cm, written area: 15½×10 cm; 21 lines per page. Codex in good condition; first and last folios somewhat damaged at the edges. Brown leather cover with fore-edge flap, with significant wear. Type III binding.

Cont.: astronomy. – Index: Ptolemaica (1v–224v). Blank: none.

Bibl.: Wilhelm Ahlwardt, Verzeichniss der arabischen Handschriften der Königlichen Bibliothek zu Berlin, vol. V, Berlin: Asher, 1893, p. 144 (no. 5656), incorrectly suggests that Shams al-Dīn al-Samarqandī may be the author, cf. C.1.37. — Qalamos: https://www.qalamos.net/receive/DE1Book_manuscript_00007150.
