Prov.:ownership statement by Maḥmūd b. Ḥasan al-Nīshī or al-Nayashī (1r), probably the astronomer who was appointed as muwaqqit at the Süleymaniye mosque in Istanbul and died in 1223/1808 (see ʿUmar Riḍā Kaḥḥāla, Muʿjam al-muʾallifīn. Tarājīm muṣannifī al-kutub al-ʿarabiyya, 4 vols, Beirut: Muʾassasat al-Risāla, 1993, vol. III, pp. 802–803). A quote from Hājjī Khalīfa’s Kashf al-Ẓunūn about the Tafsīr al-Taḥrīr, followed by an unidentified statement or quote, both in ruqʿa (Ir).
Cod.: paper, I+225 ff. (foliated with large Hindu-Arabic numerals in the top margins of rectos, correcting an earlier foliation with Hindu-Arabic numerals in the upper left corners of rectos that skipped ‘16’; catchwords). A nastaʿlīq hand with tendency to naskh; almost fully dotted ductus, some vowel marks, few hamzas and very few shaddas. Book headings apparently not highlighted; basmala in large bold thuluth (1v); additional catch titles visible in the margins for Books II, III, V–VII and IX–XI. Abjad numerals sometimes overlined. Diagrams carefully drawn, occasionally extending onto fold-ins (144r, 147v). Codex seemingly in good condition. Dimensions: 32.0×12.0 cm; 27 lines per page.
