_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

an undated statement of ownership by Ṣadr al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Dashtakī (d. after 962/1555, see Reza Pourjavady, Philosophy in Early Safavid Iran: Najm al-Dīn Maḥmūd al-Nayrīzī and His Writings, Leiden: Brill, 2011, p. 28), who states that he received the copy from his father Ghiyāth al-Dīn Manṣūr al-Dashtakī (d. 949/1542, see Pourjavady) (1r); a statement of donation dated 963/1555-6 by the same Ṣadr al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Dashtakī in favour of an unknown ‘ʿumdatʿ ulamāʾ’ (1r). An undated and anonymous statement of ownership (1r), which states that this manuscript had been owned by the late Maḥmūd b. Qādi Nūr al-Dīn Muḥammad, known as Qādi Ikhtiyār (second half of the 10th/16th century, see Charles A. Storey, Persian Literature. A Bio-Bibliographical Survey. Vol. I, Part 2: Quranic Literature, History and Biography, London: Luzac, 1953, p. 1116, no. 1515). Three seals of Khawāja Sayyid Fayḍ Allāh b. Khawāja Naẓīr (?) dated 1105 (?)/1693-4 (1r, 224r [twice]). Two erased seals and an illegible one (1r). A stamp of the Majlis library (1v, 53v, 224r). Old shelfmark: ‘6410’ (label on inside front cover).

Cod.: Samarqand paper (Ḥāʾirī), II+224+Ia ff. (foliated with Perso-Arabic numerals in pencil in the upper right corner of versos; f. 55 missing and replaced by a blank folio, see Ḥāʾirī and mismatching catchword on f. 54v; catchwords occasionally missing). A large number of hands ranging from naskh to nastaʿlīq. The largest part of the text clearly copied by the same hand is on ff. 1v–54v: a clearly readable naskh; almost fully dotted ductus, occasional vowel marks, shaddas and hamzas mostly provided. The multiple hands and different styles might indicate that this codex was copied in a workshop. Heading of Book I in red and black naskh; all other book headings in black and bold thuluth. Chapter beginnings in red; subsections mostly marked by red overlined abjad numerals in the margins; qawlu-hu and aqūl in red. Abjad and Hindu-Arabic numerals in the main text black and overlined or red without overline. Numerous diagrams with lines in red and letters in black; several unfinished diagrams (25r–26r and 62v–63r); text written within part of the diagram on f. 98r. Five tables (29v–30v). Codex in very good condition; minor water damage visible in the upper and lower parts of all folds in the second half of the codex, and a large water stain on f. 107; some folios restored with strips of paper (ff. 1, 54, 224); folio 224r partly damaged due to the flap of a previous binding, affecting the readability of the text. Dimensions: c. 25×16 cm; 24 (ff. 1–56) or 25 (ff. 57–224) lines per page. Type III binding, previously type II (traces of the flap on f. 224v).

Cont.: astronomy. — Index: Ptolemaica (1v–224r). Blank: Ir (except for three contemporary library stamps), Iv–IIv, 55r–v, 224v–Iar.
