Taʿlīq ʿalā Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī
A lemmatic commentary on al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.18) with philosophical, and occasionally religious, considerations. The unique surviving manuscript of this work contains an incomplete commentary on section III.1, starting with a basmala but breaking off before the end. The title and the name of the commentator are not included in the text, but the work is referred to as ‘annotation (taʿlīq) of Sayyid Ismāʿīl on the Almagest’ by two notes in the manuscript (1r, 251r). Since the commentary is preceded by the philosophical treatise Tanqīḥ al-ʿaqāʾid by the Safavid theologian and philosopher Sayyid Ismāʿīl Khātūnābādī, these references suggest that Ismāʿīl was also the author of the present commentary. According to the expanded Russian translation of Storey’s Persian Literature by Bregel, Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad Bāqir b. Ismāʿīl Ḥusaynī Khātūnābādī (1031/1622–1116/1704-5) was a madrasa teacher in Isfahan and was especially versed in mathematics and astronomy. He dedicated one of his works to Shāh Sulaymān (r. 1666–1694) and wrote another in Najaf (Fankha). His son Muḥammad Bāqir Khātūnābādī (d. 1127/1715) was a tutor of Shāh Sulṭān Ḥusayn (r. 1694–1722) and the first rector of the Sulṭānī Madrasa, inaugurated in 1121/1710 (Moazzen).
