Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus

_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

Fragment of a single work: Arabic. Date:

undated.

Or.:

unknown; unknown scribe.

Prov.:

originally part of the same manuscript as MS Doha, Matḥaf al-fann al-islāmī, 131. Librarian’s label with the current shelfmark falsely identifying the text as part of al-Farābī’s (sic) commentary on Ptolemy’s al-Mājīsṭī (sic, verso of modern front flyleaf). Stamped library name (pp. 1, 9, 12, 25, the latter two accompanied by ‘FES’); handwritten shelfmark ‘654’ in black Arabic-European numerals inside an oval, illegible stamp (p. 1).

Cod.: light brown parchment, 32 pp. (paginated with recent Arabic-European numerals in pencil at the bottom centre). A single clear maghribī hand in dark brown, apparently the same as MS Doha, Matḥaf al-fann al-islāmī, 131; mostly dotted ductus with occasional shaddas, no hamzas. A single chapter title, enlarged. Several diagrams with lines in red and letters in black. Manuscript well preserved: some stains, slightly worm eaten, upper left corner of some folios damaged, not affecting the readability. Dimensions: 24×18 cm; 16–18 lines per page.

Cont.: astronomy. — Index: Ptolemaica (pp. 1–32). Blank: none.

= Ptolemy, al-Majisṭī (tr. Isḥāq b. Ḥunayn/Thābit b. Qurra) (A.1.2)

. — Index: leaves covering parts of Chapters XII.1, XII.2, XII.9 in great disorder; the correct order of the pages is as follows: pp. 5–6, 9–10, 7–8, 13–14, 23–24 (XII.1); 1–2, 11–12, 3–4 (XII.2); 15–18, 25–32, 19–22 (XII.9). This was originally part of the same manuscript as MS Doha, Matḥaf al-fann al-islāmī, 131, which contains folios of other parts of Books XI and XII in the same hand, on the same material. Pages 15–18, 25–32 and 19–22 of the Fes manuscript exactly fill up the gap between the beginning and end of Chapter XII.9 in the Doha manuscript, so that the two manuscripts together contain this entire final chapter of Book XII without the table of maximum elongations of Venus and Mercury. It thus seems that the leaves of a larger manuscript of the Almagest were sold separately. — A few marginal corrections in the scribe’s hand.
