a hardly legible statement of ownership dated Muḥarram 960/December 1552-January 1553 (1r). Two ṭughrā-like signatures in maghribī script, dated 1244/1828-9; this is followed by a long note of donation in maghribī script by Abū ʿAbd Allāh Sayyidī Muḥammad 〈al-Aṣram〉, the headscribe of the chancellery (diwān al-inshāʾ) of Le Bardo (just west of Tunis), dated to the middle of Rajab 1272/March-April 1856, in favour of his grandson (1r). Undated statement by Maḥmūd b. ʿAbd al-Nājī b. Muḥammad b. Quṭb al-Dīn, accompanied by a short saying (IIr). Undated statement of ownership by ʿAbd al-Karīm ... b. ʿAlī b. al-Nās (?) (1r); undated statement of ownership by Ibrāhīm Paša … Asʿad (IIr); undated statement by Ismaʿīl b. Muḥammad b. … Ḥalabī (1r). An enumeration of names, partially damaged; verses attributed to Abū Naṣr al-Qushayrī (d. 514/1120), who was a resident of Nishapur; a poem attributed to Abū l-Qāsim al-ʿIbrī and a poem in Persian; a small excerpt probably from Muḥammad ʿAlī at-Tahānawī’s Kashshāf iṣṭilāḥāt al-funūn wa-l-ʿulūm (fl. middle of 12th/18th c.) (all on f. IIIr). An illegible statement in nastaʿlīq (Ir) and an illegible round seal (1r); at least four erased statements (IIIr, 1r). Former shelfmarks (?): ‘5348’, ‘6247’ (1r).

Cod.: paper, III+178+IIa ff. (foliated with Arabic-European numerals in pencil, mostly in the central upper part of rectos, repeating ‘162’ and skipping the folios after ‘60’ and ‘117’; bound mostly in quinions with quire signatures on every tenth recto; some catchwords, e.g., 21v, 97v, 169v). A single rather bold nastaʿlīq with tendency to naskh (with thin letters in a quicker style on f. 122r–v). Rarely dotted ductus; vowel marks, hamzas and shaddas mostly limited to book and chapter headings, occasional elongated bowls, mostly disjoined lām-alifs. Some lines crossed out (e.g., 90r, 154v). Book and chapter headings in large and bold letters; Book V headed ‘al-rābiʿ’ and corrected in the margin. Propositions (ashkāl) numbered with mostly red overlined abjad numbers in the margins; qawlu-hu/aqūlu in red; frequent use of textual dividers in the form of three dots. Abjad numbers and Hindu-Arabic numerals in the main text overlined; Hindu-Arabic numerals sometimes in red. Carefully drawn diagrams with black lines and red letters or descriptions, occasionally the other way round. Table lines in red. A small roundel in goldish green with a plant-based motif in the shape of a ‘hooked cross’ in bluish and red colours (1r). Codex in good condition; some damage by insects, mostly in the margins and the fold; slight water damage in the margins; minor stains (e.g., ff. 38, 164). Dimensions: 24,2×16,7 cm; 33 lines per page. Brown leather covers with borders and central mandorla with floral motifs. Current binding not recognisable from the scans; traces of a flap on the front doublure and ff. I–2 and 95v.
