unknown, possibly Ottoman; copied by ʿUmar b. ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar al-Asturlābī from an autograph dated 5 Shawwal 644/13 February 1247 (175r). In this manuscript, al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī is followed by a title page with the beginning of a work on the dioptra (Dhāt al-thuqbatayn); the same order of works is found in Tehran, Sipahsālār, 592, which likewise states to have been copied from the autograph.

a big round seal of endowment by Meḥmed Ragıp Paşa (Ottoman Grand Vizier, 1757–1763) dated 1175/1761-2 (1r, 89r and 175v; no. 68 in Kut & Bayraktar). A round yellow seal engraved with a Shiite prayer (1r); a faded pointed oval seal (trimmed on the scans) and a smudged round seal (1r); an illegible seal, possibly a modern library stamp (e.g., 1r, 38v, 39r). Old shelfmarks: several earlier stamps of the Ragıp Paşa collection with handwritten numbers ‘767’, ‘902’, ‘905’ (1r).

Cod.: paper, II+177+II ff. (foliated with Hindu-Arabic numerals, Persian variants, on the upper left of rectos; quire numbers written out in black (accompanied by rubricated Hindu-Arabic numerals, Persian variants, in red) at the upper left of every tenth (sometimes: eighth) folio; occasional catchwords in a later hand). A black naskh hand. Very neat and mostly dotted script; shaddas, hamzas, and maddas indicated; frequent vowel marks; occasional textual dividers in the form of a golden dot or three red dots. Book headings in dark red thuluth with the number of chapters indicated in gold, chapter headings and paragraph beginnings in gold, red or black (blue from f. 156r onwards). Chapter beginnings additionally introduced by overlined bold abjad numerals in black; subsections numbered with red overlined abjad numerals in the margins. Hindu-Arabic and abjad numbers in the main text mostly rubricated and with overlines. Numerous diagrams, tables, and a rosette (f. 91v); diagram lines and geometrical points in black or red; tables with red lines, numbers in red or black, headers in gold, red, or black (from f. 153v onwards also in blue, or green due to sulfurization). A golden frame surrounding the main text of the first three folios. Codex in very good condition; very minor water damage in the margins. Dimensions: 235×150 mm, written area: 158×79 mm; 25 lines per page. Illuminated incipit page: a rectangular panel in gold and blue with intertwining vegetal motives in gold; basmala in white, frames for the headpiece in green and gold. Leather covers with flap, decorated with a central mandorla (probably metal), entire binding covered in green cloth, doublures decorated with Hatip Ebru. Type III binding.

\1v\ أحمد الله مبدأ كلّ مبدأ وغاية كلّ غاية، ومفيض كلّ خير ووليّ كلّ هداية، وأرجو حسن توفيقه في كلّ بداية ونهاية، وأصليّ على عباده المخصوصين بالعناية والدراية، سيّما محمّد وآله الموسومين بالنبوّة والولاية  المتقدّمين في كلّ عماية وغواية وبعد فقد كنت برهة من الزمان عازمًا على أن أحرّر لنفسيّ ولسائر طلبة العلم من الإخوان كتاب المجسطي المنسوب إلى بطلميوس القلوذي الذي هو الدستور العظيم لأصحاب صناعة الهيئة والتنجيم تحريرًا لا يفوته مقاصد ذلك الكتاب النظريّة — \175r\ يا، في خاتمة الكتاب قال وإذا تمّمنا جميع ما يفتقر إلى إرشاده من وجود ما يحتاج إلى وجوده وتصحيح ما يحتاج إلى تصحيحه إلّا الشاذّ بحسب ما وصل إليه علمي ومبلغ رأيي وبقدر ما أعان الزمان عليه ودوّنّا ما هو نافع في هذا العلم من غير أن قصدنا بذلك تكبّرًا أو افتخارًا فلنختم الكتاب. وأقول وإذ وفّقني الله تعالى أيضًا لإتمام ما قصدته وإيجاز ما وعدته فلأقطع الكلام حامدًا له على الآية، ومصلّيًا على جميع أوليائه، خصوصاً على خاتم أنبيائه، والبررة من آله وأحبّائه.

This manuscript includes many of the glosses by al-Ṭūsī himself, in the hand of the scribe. Marginal or interlinear annotations including substantial glosses (e.g., 140v) and diagrams (e.g., 69v, 157v) in at least two other hands; occasional annotations in red or green (e.g., 43v). Only very few marginal corrections in the hand of the scribe, indicated by siglum ṣḥ.
