Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus

_ (the underscore) is the placeholder for exactly one character.
% (the percent sign) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character.
%% (two percent signs) is the placeholder for no, one or more than one character, but not for blank space (so that a search ends at word boundaries).

At the beginning and at the end, these placeholders are superfluous.

[Colour scanned images of the textblock and covers.]
Collection of two works: Arabic.  Date:

528/1133-4 (96r).

Or.:

unknown; copied by ʿAbd al-Jalīl b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. Muḥammad (72v, 96r and the note on f. 73r); the non-Ptolemaic part was collated with an autograph (72v).

Prov.:

endowment statement in favour of the late teacher of the Parwana Bīk Madrasa, Maḥmūd Efendi b. ʿAlī Bīk b. Maḥmūd (d. 1130/1718), received by the khaṭīb of the ʿAlī Jāwush Mosque of Kayseri, Muḥammad b. Ḥājj Khiḍr b. ʿUmar, and dated 1139/1726-7 (1r); in 1129/1716 Maḥmūd Efendi had donated 100 books of his collection to his madrasa at the Grand Bazaar of Kayseri and appointed his former student Muḥammad b. Ḥājj as a trustee of his endowment, which was finally moved to its current location in 1333/1917 (see Mehmet Çayırdağ, Kayseri tarihi araştırmaları, Kayseri: Kayseri Büyükşehir Belediyesi, 2001, p. 323). A hexagonal seal, illegible on the scans provided, which accompanies the endowment statement (1r); four contemporary library stamps (Ir, Iav).

Cod.: paper, I+96+Ia ff. (foliated in pencil with Hindu-Arabic numerals on every tenth recto and on f. 12; f. 96 incorrectly numbered 95, apparently by a different hand in pencil; no catchwords). A very clear naskh hand. Nearly fully dotted ductus, very frequent vowel marks, recurrent shaddas but no hamzas. Book headings in bold red thuluth. Abjad numerals in black and overlined. Diagrams with red lines and black letters; no tables. Codex in good condition; binding partially reinforced with pasted paper slips, damage by insects restored with pieces of paper (ff. 1r, 32–41); water damage in the outer margins throughout the codex and additionally on the upper half of the folios of the second treatise, indicating that the two parts were bound together at a later time; occasional ink stains affecting the readability (e.g., 76v, 83v); cover damaged. Dimensions: 27.2×16.5 cm, written area: 22.5×11.0 cm; 26 lines per page. Cover probably made of blackish leather, decorated with borders, blind-tooled mandorlas on the front and back covers and a lobed circular motif on the flap. Type II binding.

Cont.: mathematics, astronomy. — Index: a short excerpt of a passage on materia medica, apparently from one of Ibn al-Tilmīdh’s (?) works (inside front cover); title page (1r); Abū l-Qāsim ʿAlī b. Ismāʿīl al-Nīsābūrī, Taḥrīral-Uṣūl li-Uqlīdis (1v–72v); Ptolemaica (73r–96r); two geometrical propositions and the beginning of a third (96v, in a different hand). Blank: Iv, Iar.
