Lucknow, Mumtazul Ulama Library, 1342
finished in Ramaḍān 1034/June 1625 (213r).
Or.:Mashhad; studied, copied, and collated against an autograph by Fāʾiḍ al-Baghdādī al-Shāʿir in the period from Rabīʿ al-awwal 1032/January 1623 till Ramaḍān 1034/June 1625 (213r). The first of two framed colophons on f. 213r, written diagonally and seemingly by a different hand, states that the copyist first studied the Taḥrīr and copied quotations from ‘the prevailing commentaries and well-known interpretations’ (al-shurūh al-mutadāwila wa-l-tafāsīr al-mashhūra) into marginal notes. The second colophon, written by the scribe with the same line spacing as the main text, is that of the exemplar, stating that it was copied by a student of Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī from a manuscript finished on the last day (salkh) of Jumādā l-ūlā 678 (‘878’ in words, correct in red Hindu-Arabic numerals) on the basis of an exemplar by the hand of Quṭb al-Dīn, which itself was copied from an autograph together with part of the glosses (MSS Paris, BnF, ar. 2485 and Cairo, Dār al-kutub, K (falak) 3822 were copied from the same exemplar).
Prov.:an erased small square seal (1r). A rectangular seal of a certain Muḥammad Taqī (1r).
Cod.: paper, I+214 ff. (occasional folio numbers in red or black, inside or outside of the outer rule-border, often differing by ±1 from our refoliation; catchwords). A single naskh hand in black; fully dotted ductus. Book titles centred and in gold; chapter numbers in enlarged overlined abjad in blue, chapter titles in red; proposition numbers in red abjad in the margins. Abjad and Hindu-Arabic numerals in red and overlined; geometrical points in the text overlined in black. Original diagrams from the Isḥāq/Thābit translation of the Almagest elaborately designed with double lines filled with gold, red geometrical points, and often a single- or double-line enclosure in gold, blue or red with a shape adjusted to that of the diagram; other diagrams with blue lines and red geometrical points and mostly a red enclosure; some seemingly unfinished diagrams (e.g., 144r, 158r–159r, 192v, 201r); one diagram partially erased and redrawn (182r); some diagrams not found in the Taḥrīr (9v, 15r). Tables with titles in gold, column headers in blue and gold, blue double lines, red single lines, and a blue and red frame; a rosette (118r). Red and blue rule-borders around the text area, red outer rule-border. On f. 94v, a significant part of the text (with a diagram) is written in the margin in order to keep the next page free for a table. Codex in very bad condition; heavy damage by insects mostly around the folds, sometimes affecting the readability of text and glosses; water and moisture damage in the margins, sometimes extending into the text area. Dimensions: unknown; 22 lines per page.
