Prov.:statement of ownership by Sayyid Muḥammad b. Muḥammad Ibrahīm al-Ḥusaynī al-Khalīfa dated Dhū l-ḥijja 1132/October-November 1720, claiming that the manuscript were an autograph (bi-khaṭṭ muʾallifi-hi) and accompanied by a damaged oval seal (p. 1). A rectangular seal of ʿAbd al-Riḍā ʿAlī Riḍā Ālī, accompanied by a handwritten date 12 Ṣafar 1147/14 July 1734 (p. 1). A statement of ownership by ʿAbd al-Wāsiʿ Dāmī dated Rajab 1173/February-March 1760; a note by him dated 1173/1759-60 at Isfahan, stating that he corrected and annotated the manuscript using the Sharḥ al-Fāḍil al-Birjandī, i.e., C.1.44; a short poem in Persian by ʿAbd al-Wāsiʿ (all three on p. 1); the poet Mullā ʿAbd al-Wāsiʿ al-Dāmī b. Mullā Kalb ʿAlī died in the year of the above-mentioned notes at the age of 27 (Eduard Sachau and Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of the Persian, Turkish, Hindûstânî, and Pushtû Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, Part I: The Persian Manuscripts, Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1889, p. 289, quoting from Luṭf ʿAlī Ādhar Bīgdilī’s Atashkadeh-ye Azar). A rectangular seal ‘al-ʿAbd al-Mudhnib Khān Muḥammad’ dated 1175 and accompanied by the handwritten date Ṣafar 1175/September 1761 (p. 1). Two rectangular seals ‘Abū l-Qāsim Muḥammad b. Ḥusayn’ dated 123../1814-24, accompanied by only partially legible handwriting (p. 2) and repeated on the last page of the Ptolemaic work (p. 650). A partially legible oval seal ‘Sayyid Muḥammad b. … Muḥāmmad …’ ‘13…’ (p. 1); a rectangular seal with a Quranic verse (p. 1); at least three overwritten and/or erased statements (p. 1). Stamps ‘Dr. Caro Minasian 1935, Isfahan’ (e.g., pp. 1, 246, 656) and ‘Dr. Caro Minasian 1935 Isfahan, Library’ (p. 308); Dr. Caro Owen Minasian (1897–1973), an Armenian physician and historian from Isfahan, sold his library to UCLA in 1968. An indecipherable short note in Latin or Armenian letters dated ‘20.11.48’ (p. 656).
Cod.: different shades of paper, 656 pp. (paginated with Arabic-European numerals in pencil; pp. 141–142 loose, paginated in the wrong order and originally belonging after p. 84; catchwords, sometimes trimmed). One naskh and several nastaʿlīq hands. The largest part of the text clearly copied by the same hand is on pp. 85–204: a neat naskh with frequent vowel marks and hamzas and some shaddas; frequent use of red overlines as textual dividers; propositions numbered with red overlined abjad numerals in the margins. Headings of Books II and III in bold thuluth; headings of Books I and IV–VIII not highlighted but indicated by catch titles, mostly in red, in two hands different from the scribes’ on versos; headings of Books IX–XIII overlined in red; section beginnings and qawlu-hu / aqūlu in red or overlined. Abjad numerals mainly overlined or in red; Persian forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals mainly overlined. Carefully drawn diagrams with black lines and red geometrical points. Tables with black lines. Codex in good condition; first three folios damaged by a flap; few stains or water/moisture damage (e.g., pp. 197–198); notes and parts of diagrams in the margins were folded in when the manuscript was trimmed. Dimensions: 19×12 cm; 25 lines per page on pp. 2–650, 28–32 on pp. 653–656. Previously or currently type II binding.
