Istanbul, Süleymaniye Kütüphanesi, Ayasofya 2583
Thursday, 5 Shawwāl 686/13 November 1287 (113r).
Or.:unknown, probably Persia; copied by Abū l-Maḥāmid Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Masʿūd al-Arzawānī, born al-Turkistānī (colophon, 113r), a student of Quṭb al‐Dīn al-Shīrāzī who also copied Dublin, Chester Beatty, Ar. 3637, dated 10 Shawwāl 691/24 September 1292 in Shīrāz. Collation finished on 21 Dhū l-qaʿda 686 in the madrasa Qārfasiyya in Nishapur (collation note in red, 113r). The collator is probably Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān, another student of al-Shīrāzī who compared the text to a manuscript that was corrected and read in the presence of the author (i.e., al-Ṭūsī). He laments the harsh socio-political circumstances and a lack of interest in scientific manuscripts at the local markets, followed by several lines praising Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī (118r).
Prov.:a pointed oval seal with the tughra of Sultan Bayezid II (r. 1481–1512) (1r, 118r). A big round seal of Sultan Mahmud I (r. 1730–1754), and a statement of endowment in his favour, received by Aḥmad Shaykh Zāda, inspector of endowments ‘in the two Holy Shrines’, with his seal (1r). A note in riqāʿ mentioning Ḥishām … Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasanī (1r). Old shelfmark: ‘naskh 67’ (?) (Ir).
Cod.: oriental paper, I+118 ff. (foliated with Hindu-Arabic numerals with Cairene characteristics in pencil; an identical earlier foliation in abjad notation; quire numbers on every eighth folio indicated with overlined Hindu-Arabic numerals; no catchwords). A black angular naskh hand within a red double frame. Very neat but irregularly dotted script, vowel marks scarcely indicated; hardly any hamzas or shaddas. Incipit page starting with an oversized basmala in bold black thuluth, probably by the scribe (cf. the almost identical headings in MS Dublin, Chester Beatty, Ar. 3637). Book titles in black thuluth, chapter headings and paragraph beginnings rubricated. Chapter beginnings additionally introduced by overlined bold abjad numerals in black; subsections numbered with red overlined abjad numerals in the margins. Hindu-Arabic and abjad numerals in the main text with overlines and occasionally rubricated. Numerous diagrams, tables and a rosette (61v); diagram lines and geometrical points in black and red; tables with red double lines, numbers and headers in red and black. Codex in good condition; first folio repaired with a slip of paper; some damage caused by insects especially in the inner lower margins, occasionally affecting the readability. Dimensions: 19.5×14 cm; 27 lines per page. Brown leather covers with frames and corner pieces, blind-tooled central lobed medallion with pendants on front and back covers and flap; spine severely damaged. Type II binding.
