One of the three appendices that were frequently copied at the end of al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.18) in manuscripts that ultimately derive from exemplars stemming from the scholastic milieu of the Maragha observatory (cf. C.1.18a and C.1.18c, and see the note on these appendices in the description of C.1.18). The present appendix appears together with C.1.18a (but without C.1.18c) in manuscripts deriving from a copy of the autograph made for the preacher Maḥmūd al-Khaṭīb in Maragha in 663/1265. According to its title, this is a ‘useful preliminary’ for the computation of the anomaly of the planets from their eccentricity. It consists of a series of geometrical proofs with six diagrams and a small sketch of ratios within the text.
