Work C.1.18c

Anonymous
في الشكل الزهرة في الفصل الثاني من المقالة العاشرة من المجسطي
Fī Shakl al-zuhara fī l-faṣl al-thānī min al-maqāla al-ʿāshira min al-Majisṭī

One of the three appendixes that were frequently copied at the end of al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.18) in manuscripts that ultimately derive from an exemplar attributed to Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī (cf. C.1.18a and C.1.18b, and see the note on these appendices in the description of C.1.18). This treatise presents the computation of the eccentricity and the epicycle radius of Venus with all intermediate numerical steps. The single figure that is provided in some of the manuscripts (e.g., MS Istanbul, Nuruosmaniye, 2941) is not the same as that in Almagest X.2. This treatise appears to have circulated earlier than the other two appendices: it is already found on its own on slips of paper inserted at their thematically correct place after Chapter X.2 of the Taḥrīr in MS Tehran, Sipahsālār, 592 (Maragha, 662/1264, with a very different title) and in MS Cairo, Dār al-kutub, hayʾa Talʿat 43 (670–673/1272–1274, by al-ʿUrḍī’s son). Alternative titles: frequently: tashakkul for shakl; Istikhrāj dhalika bi-l-jabr wa-l-muqābala istakhraja-hu al-muṣannif ghayr nuṣra (Tehran, Sipahsālār, 592); Qawl fī tashakkul al-zuhara fī l-faṣl al-thānī min al-maqāla al-ʿāshira min al-Majisṭī (Istanbul, Süleymaniye, Turhan Valide Sultan 219).
