Work C.1.48
Kāfī b. Muḥtashim al-Qāʾinī
〈حاشية على شرح المجسطي للبرجندي〉
〈Ḥāshiya ʿalā Sharḥ al-Majisṭī li-l-Birjandī〉
A mathematical commentary on al-Birjandī’s commentary (C.1.44) on al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.18), which also refers to several other commentaries. According to a note on the title page of the unique manuscript of this work, seemingly by the scribe, it is most likely authored by the Safavid scholar Mīrzā Abū Jaʿfar Kāfī b. Muḥtashim al-Qāʾinī (d. after 1622), who also wrote a commentary on al-Khāzimī’s Ikhtiṣār al-Majisṭī (see C.1.48). As the manuscript breaks off in section II.12, it is not clear whether al-Qāʾinī covered a larger part of al-Birjandī’s commentary. The first part of the text (ff. 1v–25r) deals with preliminaries for spherical trigonometry, including the sector figure and some proofs for declinations and ascensions, without a subdivision. The remainder contains al-Qāʾinī’s commentary on Book II. Al-Qāʾinī follows al-Birjandī in reproducing the section titles of al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr. Besides several explicit mentions of al-Birjandī (e.g., 2r, 29v, 76v), this work includes frequent references to Euclid’s Elements (e.g., 2r, 4r, 8v), a few mentions of al-Nisābūrī’s Tafsīr Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.38) (e.g., 1v, 19r, 43v), as well as sporadic references to al-Bīrūnī’s al-Qānūn al-Masʿūdī (20r) and ‘some commentators’ (baʿḍ al-shāriḥīn) (e.g., 55v, 59v, 66r).
