A lemmatic commentary on al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.18) by Mīr Muḥammad Hāshim b. Mīr Muḥammad Qāsim (al-Ḥusaynī) al-Jīlānī. He was proficient in religious studies, mathematics and medicine and worked in Mecca and Medina for twelve years before moving to India. There he studied with ʿAlī al-Jīlānī, the author of C.1.45, and tutored the Moghul prince Aurangzeb. Besides commentaries on religious and philosophical works, Muḥammad Hāshim is known to have written a commentary on Euclid’s Elements. He died in Aurangabad in 1061/1650 at the age of eighty (see al-Ḥasanī). The name of the author is indicated only on the title page of the manuscript but is not included in the text.

The present commentary includes frequent quotations from, and references to, al-Birjandī’s Sharḥ Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.44) (e.g., 7v, 45v, 38^av) as well as occasional references to Thābit’s version of the Almagest (A.1.3) (e.g., 1v, 22r, 65^ar), al-Nisābūrī’s Tafsīr Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī (C.1.38) (e.g., 5v, 11v, 88r), and to ‘some scholars’ (baʿḍ al-muḥāqqiqīn) (172^av). Several references to al-Bīrūnī (e.g., 22v, 34r, 45r) are different from those given by al-Ṭūsī in the Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī.

The sole surviving manuscript of this commentary does not have a preface and does not treat chapters I.1–8 of the Almagest. It begins with an untitled section discussing the sector figure (al-shakl al-qaṭṭāʿ), sine theorem (al-shakl al-mughnī) and tangent theorem (al-shakl al-ẓillī) with applications to some astronomical problems, such as the determination of the solar declination. This section replaces sections I.9–12 and is followed by titled sections I.13 and I.14. The rest of the work treats Books II and III quotation by quotation, in the order of their discussion in al-Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr. The section titles are not identical with those in the Almagest or any of the above-mentioned commentaries.

[Book I] (1v–60v) ونعوذ إلى الكتاب وهذا موضع رقم ح قول هو أيّ الشكل الثامن هو القطّاع والمراد به هاهنا أربعة خطوط يتقاطع كلّ اثنين منها فقط على نقطة وهيئته يحصل يجعل أنملتي السبّابتين فيحيطتين بزاوية —وكلّ جزئين متساوي البعد عن الاعتدال ميلاهما متساويان فيلزم تساوي المطالعين وهو المطلوب. تمّت المقالة الأولى فالحمد للّه كما هو أهله وصلّي الله على محمّد وآله وأصحابه الطاهرين.

[Book II] (1^av–90^a,bisv) المقالة الثانية ثلاثة عشر فصلًا وخمسة وعشرون شكلًا الفصل الأولى في جملة القدر المسكون من الأرض الذي ثبت مسكوانيته (كذا) عندنا وإلّا فبعضهم زعم أنّ الأرباع الآخر أيضًا مسكونة —وينقص عنها إن كانت شرقيّة ليحصل ساعات البعد عن نصف النهار تلك المدينة قيل وكان الكتاب الموعود هو جغفرافيًا (كذا) أي صورة الأقاليم. تمّت المقالة الثانية بحمد الله وحسن توفيقه.

[Book III] (91^a,bisv–180^av) المقالة الثالث (كذا) وهي عشرة فصول وعشرون شكلًا نريد أن نبيّن فيها أحوال والشمس وهي السنة الشمسيّة ووسط الشمس وبعد يليها وكان بين مركزيها واختلافاتها الجزئيّة وتقويمها وتعديل الأيّام —نتلف التفاوتان نحسب المسير {…} وبحسب الطالع بالتفصيل السابق {…} أيّ من الدرجة السادسة من الحوت||
