Prov.:an ownership statement by Rustam b. Shāh Wīrdī with oval seal (p. I); his nastaʿlīq hand could be that of the main annotator, who also left a note dated Muḥarram 1153/March-April 1740 (p. 1). A donation statement by ʿAbd … Muḥammad … with an oval seal and an ownership statement without name, signed al-ʿabd al-ʿāṣī, i.e., ‘the sinful worshipper’ (p. I). A note on measurements in cubits and fingers together with two drawn rulers with somewhat different scales (p. I), a third sketch of a ruler in a different hand (p. I, inner margin). A small oval seal ‘Muḥammad Ḥusayn’ on several pages (e.g., pp. 17, 99, 199); a modern stamp with Roman letters ‘MH’ (p. 323, upside down).
Cod.: paper, I+323 pp. (odd page numbers in Hindu-Arabic numerals in the upper right corner of versos; catchwords in the scribe’s hand). An elegant black naskh hand with head-serifs. Very neat and almost fully dotted script; shaddas, hamzas, maddas and wasla often provided; frequent use of lām-alif mukhaffafa and lām-alif muḥaqqaqa; occasional vowel signs. Textual dividers in red, inserted by a later hand. Frames in gold, blue and red surrounding the main text, space for marginal annotations surrounded by a thin red frame. Book and chapter numbers written out in gold thuluth, paragraph and chapter beginnings highlighted in red thuluth. Hindu-Arabic and abjad numbers in the main text mostly rubricated and with overlines. Diagrams, often reaching into the margins (e.g., pp. 86, 144, 313) and incomplete in the first appendix (p. 316), with lines and geometrical points in black or red; diagram lines occasionally erased and corrected (e.g., pp. 242, 246). Tables (some tilted or upside down, e.g., p. 57) with red or black lines and headers in gold or black ink; a rosette (p. 184); Text in diagrams and tables mostly in a nastaʿlīq hand. Illuminated incipit page with Safavid characteristics: headpiece mainly in blue and gold, vegetal decorations in red, blue, rose, and green; elaborated lancets in blue; inscription for golden cartouche missing. Codex in very good condition; minor damage caused by moisture and mould in the margins, not affecting the readability. Dimensions: 37.2×24.5 cm; 17 lines per page with generous space between the lines. Reddish brown leather covers, on front and back decorated with several golden frames; corner pieces and a central mandorla with pendants in black illuminated with floral motifs; doublures in black. Type III binding.
